Fiji Mourns the Loss of Beloved Priest: A Legacy of Faith and Service

Fiji’s longest-serving Catholic priest, Father Alan Finn, affectionately known as the ‘Mighty Finn’, has passed away. He died on April 5, 2025, as announced on the Archdiocese of Suva’s Facebook page, which expressed gratitude for his life and contributions to the faith community.

Father Finn was ordained on July 18, 1959, and his service reached across many years, beginning with his arrival in Fiji in 1964. Over the years, he played a significant role in various parishes, notably in the Nausori, Natovi, and Wainibuka areas. In a heartfelt video interview, he recounted the challenges of his pastoral work, including crossing numerous rivers to reach church members for mass services.

His dedication did not go unrecognized; three years prior to his passing, he was honored with a President’s medal for his exemplary service to the people of Fiji. The Archdiocese has expressed its condolences to Father Finn’s family and fellow members of the Congregation of the Mission during this time of mourning.

Similar to recent tributes honoring the late Reverend Tuikoro Kolinisau and Father James Ross, both respectful acknowledgments of long-standing service to faith and community illustrate the profound impact such figures have had on Fijian society. Their legacies stress the importance of dedication, community support, and the enduring influence of spiritual leaders in fostering unity and resilience.

This sad event serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by individuals like Father Finn who have dedicated their lives to serving others and nurturing faith, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire future generations. As the community reflects on his life, it remains hopeful that the values he upheld will continue to resonate within Fiji.
