Fiji Mourns the Loss of a Community Leader: Ratu Meli Saukuru Passes Away

The chief of NADI, Na Turaga na i Taukei Navo Ratu Meli Saukuru, has passed away, as announced by the Ba Provincial Council on Facebook. Ratu Meli was a prominent figure in both political and community leadership in Fiji. He served as a vice-chair of the Great Council of Chiefs after receiving the second-highest number of votes during the council’s election last year.

Ratu Meli’s significant contributions included his role as the former Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs in the Qarase-led government, during which he was a member of the Soqosoqo ni Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party (SDL). His political journey took flight when he won the Ba West Fijian Communal seat in the 2006 General Elections.

Beyond politics, Ratu Meli was heavily involved in various boards, holding leadership positions with the Fiji Pine Group of Companies, the Fiji Pine Trust, and the Ba Provincial Council. He was also a trustee of the Methodist Church of Fiji Holding Trust.

Tributes have begun pouring in, reflecting on Ratu Meli’s long-lasting impact on the community and the legacy he leaves behind. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced, and his passing is regarded as a significant loss both politically and culturally.

His contribution to Fiji’s multi-ethnic affairs and dedication to his community will be remembered and honored by those he served. This highlights the need for continued commitment to community leadership and service, inspiring future generations to walk in those footsteps.
