People from diverse backgrounds gathered at the National Gymnasium in Suva today to pay tribute to Fijian Featherweight Boxer Ubayd Haider, affectionately known as the ‘Prince of Fiji.’ The memorial follows Haider’s tragic passing at Lautoka Hospital after suffering severe head injuries during a boxing match on October 26.
Sports Minister Jese Saukuru attended the memorial, delivering a heartfelt eulogy. He expressed the profound loss felt across Fiji, highlighting Haider’s impact as a role model for aspiring athletes. “Fiji has lost a golden talent, and the country mourns the loss of the young boxer,” Saukuru stated, underscoring Haider’s inspiration to younger generations.
Former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy, who knew Haider personally, emphasized the boxer’s dedication and humility. He expressed admiration for Haider’s commitment to boxing, noting his potential for greatness in the sport.
Boxing legend Sonny Bill Williams also extended his condolences, having witnessed Haider’s recent fight. He promised to visit the Singh family personally to offer support during this difficult time.
Following the tribute at the National Gymnasium, Haider’s body was taken to his family home in Laucala Bay, and a burial service is set to occur at Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. Haider leaves behind his wife, Helen, and their two young sons, ensuring his legacy lives on through his family.
This poignant gathering serves as a reminder of the close-knit bonds within the Fijian community and how sports can unite and inspire people, even in times of grief. Haider’s legacy as a dedicated athlete and an inspirational figure for future generations will be remembered and cherished.
