Hundreds of mourners turned out at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to pay their respects to Ubayd Haider, a celebrated super feather-weight and light-weight boxing champion from Fiji, who passed away recently. The gathering saw notable figures including the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Lenora Qereqeretabua, come together to honor Haider’s memory, along with family, friends, and members of the boxing community.
Haider, who was originally known as Nathan Singh, had been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Aspen Hospital for over two weeks before his death, which occurred late Sunday night. His health issues arose post his match on October 26 against China’s Runqi Zhou, where he suffered a technical knockout. Following the match, Haider collapsed on his way to the changing room.
In a heartfelt tribute from Canada, Mohammed Shameem, director of South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP), reflected on Haider’s legacy stating, “Ubayd was a person of kindness, strength, and generosity… Today, we not only mourn Ubayd’s loss, but we also carry forward the lessons he taught us.”
Haider’s brother, Sebastian Singh, expressed gratitude for the support their family received during this tough time, and shared how Haider had insisted on fighting despite being unwell days before the match, expressing that he faced pressure to participate.
Former sporting icon Sonny Bill Williams also conveyed his condolences from Sydney, highlighting the significant loss Haider’s passing represents for Fijian boxing. Haider was laid to rest at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu, leaving behind a legacy that inspired many in the boxing arena and beyond.
