Hundreds of mourners came together at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to pay their respects to Ubayd Haider, Fiji’s former super feather-weight and light-weight boxing champion. The emotional gathering included notable figures such as Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy, and many others from the boxing community, along with Haider’s family and friends.

Haider, known previously as Nathan Singh, tragically passed away late Sunday after a prolonged stay in the Intensive Care Unit of Lautoka Aspen Hospital. He had collapsed following a technical knockout loss to fighter Runqi Zhou in a championship bout on October 26.

Tributes poured in for Haider, reflecting on his kindness and significant contributions to boxing in Fiji. Tribute from SPBP director Mohammed Shameem emphasized that while the community mourns his loss, they also carry forward the invaluable lessons he taught. Family members, including his brother Sebastian Singh, underscored the support received since Haider’s hospitalization and highlighted his determination to fight despite feeling unwell before the match.

Former sporting figure Sonny Bill Williams and others expressed deep sorrow over Haider’s passing, recognizing it as a significant loss for Fijian boxing. Minister Saukuru assured Haider’s family of an extensive investigation to reveal the circumstances leading to his death. Haider was laid to rest at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu.

In summary, Ubayd Haider’s legacy as a dedicated athlete and caring individual will long be remembered by those whose lives he touched. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges athletes face both inside and outside the ring, and his contributions to boxing continue to inspire future generations.
