Hundreds of mourners gathered at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to honor the life of Ubayd Haider, Fiji’s super feather-weight and light-weight champion. Among those in attendance were notable figures such as Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy, and numerous members of the boxing community, including family, friends, and fans.

Haider, who had previously fought under the name Nathan Singh, passed away in the Intensive Care Unit of Lautoka Aspen Hospital, following a two-week battle with health issues. He fell ill just four days prior to his fight against Runqi Zhou on October 26, where he experienced a technical knockout. His brother, Sebastian Singh, noted the immense support their family received during this difficult time and expressed his brother’s fighting spirit despite his illness.

Condolences poured in from various figures, including Mohammed Shameem, director of South Pacific Boxing Promotions, who celebrated Haider’s contributions to the sport and his legacy of kindness and strength. Former rugby star Sonny Bill Williams also shared his tribute from abroad, emphasizing the impact of Haider’s passing on the boxing community.

In response to concerns surrounding his fight and subsequent health decline, Minister Saukuru assured the Singh family that a comprehensive investigation would ensue to uncover the truth. This ensures accountability and may lead to improved safety measures within the sport.

Haider was laid to rest at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu, leaving behind a legacy that highlights the passionate spirit of boxing in Fiji and the powerful connections he fostered in the sport.

This article serves as not only a memorial to Ubayd Haider but also a reminder of the importance of health and safety in sports. As the boxing community comes together in grief, they also strengthen their commitment to learn from this tragedy, ensuring a brighter future in the sport for aspiring athletes.

In summary, while the loss of Ubayd Haider is deeply felt, his memory and contributions to boxing will continue to inspire many in Fiji and beyond.
