Hundreds of people came together at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to pay their respects to Ubayd Haider, a celebrated super featherweight and lightweight boxing champion in Fiji. The gathering included notable figures such as the Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, and former Minister for Agriculture Dr. Mahendra Reddy, among others from the boxing community, local businesses, family, and friends.
Haider, who was also known by his birth name Nathan Singh, passed away on Sunday night after spending more than two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at the Lautoka Aspen Hospital. His health deteriorated following a match on October 26 against China’s Runqi Zhou for the International Boxing Association Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title, where he collapsed after suffering a technical knockout (TKO).
In a message from Canada, SPBP director Mohammed Shameem expressed heartfelt condolences, remembering Haider for his kindness and contributions to boxing in Fiji. He emphasized that while the community mourns Haider’s passing, they also celebrate the lessons he imparted during his life.
Haider’s older brother, Sebastian Singh, highlighted the immense support their family has received since Ubayd’s hospitalization and reflected on his brother’s courageous spirit, noting that he had been unwell days before the fight but still chose to compete.
Former sporting icon Sonny Bill Williams and veteran trainer John Ramos also sent their condolences, recognizing Haider’s significant impact on the sport in Fiji. In light of these events, Minister Saukuru promised that an investigation through a commission of inquiry would take place to ensure transparency surrounding the circumstances of Haider’s passing.
Haider was laid to rest at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu on the evening following the service. His legacy in the boxing community continues to inspire many, with hopes that his story will lead to greater awareness and support for athlete welfare in competitive sports.
In summary, Ubayd Haider’s funeral brought together a diverse community to honor his life and contributions, reminding everyone of the impact one individual can have in fostering unity, strength, and remembrance in the face of tragedy. The hope is that this unity will lead to positive changes in athlete care and support moving forward.
