A mother of four is making an urgent plea for help as her 13-year-old daughter faces a critical need for specialized eye treatment in India. Evlin Ashika Devi has been informed by medical professionals at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital that her daughter, Jiya Geetanjali Prasad, requires an amniotic membrane grafting procedure, which is not available in Fiji.
Ms. Devi is seeking to raise over $5,000 to ensure that Jiya can receive this essential treatment promptly, allowing her to continue her education in the upcoming 2026 academic year. In addition to the surgical costs, she noted that there will be additional expenses, including round-trip airfare for her husband and mother, who plan to accompany Jiya, as well as accommodation and food during their stay in India. She emphasized the possibility of extended costs should any complications arise during the treatment, underscoring the urgency of their situation.
Jiya has struggled with her eye condition since she was six years old, experiencing symptoms like swollen eyes, redness, itchiness, and pain. Despite numerous visits to the Pacific Eye Institute and a changing medication regimen, her condition has deteriorated to the point where even opening her eyes is painful.
Doctors have confirmed that surgery is not an option in Fiji, leading to a heart-wrenching conclusion for Ms. Devi and her family. “We have consulted various doctors with the report from the hospital, and each one has reiterated that surgery is not feasible here,” she said, emphasizing their desperate search for help.
For those wishing to contribute to Jiya’s treatment, donations can be made directly to Evlin Ashika Devi’s BSP account, number 87407367, or via M-Paisa by sending to Ms. Devi at 2721696. This poignant appeal highlights the challenges faced by families in need of medical assistance that isn’t accessible within their home country, and it serves as a reminder of the power of community support in times of crisis.
