Fijian troops are set to be deployed to Vanuatu to aid in recovery efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck earlier this week. The team will include members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Police, reflecting a commitment to assist the neighboring nation in its time of need.

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s support for Vanuatu during a discussion with Prime Minister Charlot Salwai. Rabuka expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and the scale of destruction caused by the earthquakes, which have claimed at least 14 lives.

The Prime Minister noted that Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to coordinate logistical support for the recovery efforts, despite complications due to damage at the airport runway. The planned entry into Vanuatu will be via Santo, followed by boat transport to the most affected areas.

The earthquakes have resulted in devastating infrastructure damage, impacting hospitals, roads, buildings, and critical systems such as water reservoirs and gas lines. Additionally, a massive landslide has obstructed the seaport, further complicating the delivery of essential supplies and resources.

This swift response underscores the strong ties and mutual support existing between Pacific nations in times of crisis. As international efforts come together, there is hope that Vanuatu will recover and rebuild with resilience stronger than before.

Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds.
