The Government is intensifying its efforts to combat illicit drug use through enhanced collaborations with religious leaders, recognizing the vital role faith-based organizations play in shaping community values and support. This commitment was underscored during a recent meeting between Ioane Naivalurua, the Minister for Policing and Communications, and representatives from the Council of Churches.

During the discussions, Minister Naivalurua emphasized that drug-related crime is often intertwined with broader social issues, such as poverty and unemployment, which can lead individuals to engage in the illegal drug trade as a means of survival. He pointed out that law enforcement alone cannot address this complex issue and urged for a coordinated, community-focused response.

To provide a framework for this unified approach, the Minister shared details about the Government’s National Narcotics Strategy. This strategy adopts a whole-of-government and whole-of-society perspective, focusing on prevention, enforcement, treatment, rehabilitation, and community outreach. A key aspect is the emphasis on early intervention and raising awareness at the grassroots level.

Church leaders were identified as essential partners in this initiative, given their capacity to foster moral values, strengthen family bonds, and promote positive life choices within their communities. Notable attendees at the meeting included Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, Rev. James Bhagwan, Rev. Sepiuta Hala’api, Peter Schultz, and Rev. Nacanieli, Senior Pastor of Church Abundance. Minister Naivalurua was joined by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu and other senior officials from the Fiji Police Force.

This collaborative effort symbolizes a hopeful step towards building healthier communities, promoting resilience, and addressing the underlying issues leading to drug-related challenges. The Government’s proactive stance, combined with the support of faith-based institutions, presents a promising avenue for combating the detrimental effects of illicit drugs on society.
