The recent heavy rainfall has sparked significant concerns regarding inadequate drainage systems in various towns and urban areas across the country. This issue has been brought to the forefront following the Fiji Meteorological Service’s warning that two tropical cyclones are expected to pass through the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone, with one cyclone having a notable likelihood of escalating to a Category 3 system. In response to these developments, government agencies are intensifying their disaster preparedness initiatives.

Local Government Minister Maciu Naulumisa addressed the persistent drainage problems, stating that efforts are already underway to tackle these challenges. The Local Government and Disaster Management ministries are collaborating to explore strategies aimed at mitigating the effects of flash flooding during heavy rain events.

Naulumisa emphasized the integration of municipal councils into the disaster management system, encouraging them to proactively clear drains and prepare for impending disasters, including flooding and cyclones. He urged municipalities not to rely solely on the Fiji Roads Authority or the Ministry of Waterways, but to take immediate action to ensure the safety of the public.

Nausori, one of the most flood-prone towns in Fiji, has expressed its dedication to prioritizing drainage improvements in the current financial year. As the nation navigates through cyclone season and faces the challenges posed by continued heavy rainfall, addressing the drainage issues remains a crucial focus for the government. This proactive approach highlights the government’s commitment to safeguarding communities from the adverse impacts of severe weather events.
