The Fiji Cancer Society is urging communities to adopt simple yet crucial measures to prevent cancer. During a Community Walk in Suva, Chief Executive Belinda Chan emphasized the importance of awareness, prevention, and early detection in the fight against this prevalent disease.

Chan remarked that cancer impacts families in every corner of Fiji, and as participants returned home from the event, she encouraged them to “walk the walk, talk the talk, and be united with our unique stories.” She expressed hope that their collective efforts would inspire a wave of change throughout their communities and the wider region.

Highlighting that one-third of cancers are preventable, Chan advocated for healthy lifestyle choices, including consuming local produce, engaging in regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, and practicing sun safety. She specifically urged women to conduct breast self-exams and to schedule regular cervical screenings, emphasizing that consistent testing could lead to the elimination of cervical cancer.

Additionally, men were advised to seek medical attention promptly for any persistent symptoms to ensure timely intervention. Throughout the event, Chan reiterated the significance of community support, stating that “no one should face cancer alone.” This call to action provides hope by reinforcing the impact of collective efforts in cancer prevention and early detection, encouraging a united front against the disease in Fiji.
