Fiji missing netball coach Unaisi Rakoura: search continues amid river dangers

The search for former national netball coach Unaisi Rakoura continues today, as police and naval divers work diligently to locate her after she went missing near the Navuso Agriculture School. This unfortunate incident occurred over the weekend while Rakoura was out collecting kai, or freshwater mussels, with a companion.

Tragically, the body of the second woman who was with Ms. Rakoura has already been recovered from the Rewa River. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place today to determine the cause of death. Authorities have stated that divers from both the Police Mobile Force and the Fiji Navy are leading the ongoing search efforts to locate Ms. Rakoura.

This event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by natural water bodies. In recent months, Fiji has witnessed a series of distressing drowning incidents that have raised significant concerns about water safety, particularly related to strong currents in local rivers. Reports from previous incidents highlight the urgent need for increased public awareness regarding the risks associated with swimming and other activities near fast-moving waterways.

Community engagement is key during such challenging times, with local authorities urging families to closely supervise children and inexperienced swimmers during water activities. The collective hope within the community remains that the lessons learned from these heartbreaking events will foster heightened awareness and preventative measures that can help avoid similar tragedies in the future.

As search operations continue, the resilience and unity of the community will play a crucial role in addressing these ongoing challenges, reflecting their commitment to ensuring that safety around water bodies is prioritized for the well-being of all.
