Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has strongly suggested that Sports Minister Jese Saukuru consider stepping aside as investigations into the Fiji Sports Council travel controversy intensify. This controversy involves allegations regarding the utilization of a contra arrangement with Fiji Airways to facilitate travel for Saukuru’s wife to New Zealand.

In a recent statement, Prime Minister Rabuka confirmed that he has advised Saukuru to refrain from interfering with the ongoing investigation. He drew a comparison to a precedent set by Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who voluntarily stepped down during an investigation last year, indicating that such a decision by Saukuru could be seen as favorable.

When directly asked if he recommended Saukuru’s resignation, Rabuka indicated that it appears to be a prudent choice, stating, “Well, as a mature Member of Parliament, having been in now, going into his second term, hopefully he will realize that that might be the better option for all of us.” However, the Prime Minister did not issue a formal directive for Saukuru to resign.

In response to the allegations, Saukuru has acknowledged his use of the contra arrangement and has expressed willingness to repay any associated expenses. This situation highlights the ongoing scrutiny over public officials’ actions and the importance of maintaining integrity in governance as the investigation unfolds.
