The Minister for Employment, Agni Deo Singh, has expressed significant concern regarding the escalating issue of drug abuse among the youth in Fiji. Speaking to students at the DAV Girls College in Suva during the prefects’ induction ceremony on Thursday, he highlighted the alarming trend as a serious threat to the future of young people, despite the plethora of opportunities available to them.

“The rise of drug abuse among youth is one of the most pressing issues we face today,” Mr. Singh stated. He emphasized that drugs have dire consequences, including the destruction of dreams, deterioration of health, disruption of families, and the derailment of educational and employment prospects.

Mr. Singh called on the newly inducted school prefects to take an active role in addressing this challenge within their educational communities. He urged them to lead by example, advocating for healthy lifestyles, fostering positive friendships, and instilling strong values. “Encourage your peers to remain focused on their education and personal development,” he advised. “Be vigilant, and if you see someone straying off course, guide them towards support.”

In underscoring the importance of education in combatting social issues, Singh asserted that when students are actively engaged in learning, developing skills, participating in sports, cultural activities, and leadership opportunities, they are more likely to create fulfilling and successful futures. He urged the prefects to cultivate an environment within schools that motivates students to be focused, disciplined, and ambitious.

Mr. Singh’s message serves as a call to action for both students and educators alike, reinforcing the critical role that young leaders play in shaping a healthier and more supportive school community. This proactive approach is essential not only for individual growth but also for the collective future of society, highlighting the power of positivity and support amidst challenges.
