Cabinet Minister Filimone Vosarogo has expressed strong disapproval of comments made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who made disparaging references to the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden. Vosarogo labeled these remarks as “distasteful and offensive,” calling into question Seruiratu’s suitability as a leader.

In a statement, Vosarogo emphasized that comparing Fiji’s Prime Minister to the former U.S. president was inappropriate for someone aspiring to guide the country. He stated, “The recent statement of the Leader of Opposition is downright distasteful. It is unbelievable coming from the position he holds.”

Vosarogo took issue with Seruiratu’s suggestion that President Biden was “unable to keep pace with events” and offered “conflicting recollections,” pointing out that these comments not only offend the American people but also President Biden’s family. “He should be ashamed of himself,” Vosarogo added, stressing the importance for political leaders to maintain decorum in their discourse.

Furthermore, Vosarogo highlighted the legitimacy of Biden’s presidency, questioning the Opposition leader’s own political journey. “The 46th President of the United States carried himself to the White House by right. How about you? How did you get to Parliament?” he challenged.

In his remarks, Vosarogo called for civility, politeness, and respect in political discussions, especially from those in positions of leadership. “Respect is required from those who aspire to lead this nation. That is fine. In doing so, do so with dignity,” he remarked.

He also warned that Seruiratu’s comments might have broader diplomatic repercussions. “I hope he understands that his degrading reference to the former American President can affect relationships at many levels,” Vosarogo stated, urging an apology to both the American people and the Prime Minister for the offending remarks.

This situation underscores the need for respectful dialogue within the political arena, as maintaining diplomatic relationships is vital for national interests.
