The Minister for Public Enterprises, Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage, and Arts, Charan Jeath Singh, recently engaged in discussions with the Board of Directors and senior management of the Pacific Fishing Company Limited (PAFCO) to evaluate the company’s performance, challenges, and future strategies. This meeting underscored the importance of PAFCO’s role in the Levuka community and its significant contribution to Fiji’s national fisheries value chain.

Minister Singh emphasized that the meeting was essential due to PAFCO’s crucial position in supporting livelihoods in Levuka and its overall impact on the country’s fisheries sector. He pointed out that understanding the operational challenges faced by PAFCO is vital for determining the path forward for the company.

The Minister highlighted the need for PAFCO to secure a reliable tuna supply, which is foundational for stable production and predictable pricing. He also stressed the necessity for the company to diversify as it navigates an increasingly competitive global market. This includes adherence to international safety and sustainability standards, alongside continued investment in both its workforce and the Levuka community.

Singh acknowledged the Fijian Government’s significant support for PAFCO, which reflects its commitment to the company’s long-term success. He urged that this support be paired with disciplined execution, establishing clear targets, and achieving measurable results.

PAFCO Board Chairman Ranjan Charan expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit and reiterated the Board and management’s dedication to collaborating closely to enhance the company’s operational performance. This collaborative spirit and focus on improvement promises a hopeful future for PAFCO and the wider Levuka community.
