Fiji Mine Workers Union Signs Historic Agreement for Vatukoula Strike Payout

The Fiji Mine Workers Union marked a major achievement yesterday by finalizing the agreement on the Vatukoula Strike Payout. Presented by Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, the settlement will provide long-awaited compensation to 368 miners after a 33-year wait.

Minister Singh highlighted that the strike had severely impacted the miners’ lives. Under the new agreement, each miner will receive $10,000 by August 2024, with an additional $15,000 planned for disbursement next year.

Joseva Sadreau, the president of the Fiji Mine Workers Union, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Coalition Government, recalling the three-decade-long hardship faced by the miners. “I would like to thank the Coalition Government for making this happen because at least we are getting something out of nothing. I want to thank the almighty for this; it’s signed now. I also want to thank the lord, the management, and the current Government for their efforts.”

Out of the 368 miners, 183 have passed away, leaving 185 still living. Minister Singh assured that for the deceased miners, the ministry would identify their families to ensure the payment is handed out appropriately.
