Fiji Military’s Path to Healing: Church’s Support for Reconciliation Initiative

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has officially supported the Reconciliation and Restoration Programme initiated by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This program is designed to promote healing and strengthen unity within the military and the wider community, reflecting a commitment to collaborative development and national advancement.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, highlighted the significance of this initiative. “We are backing it, especially in light of the military’s ongoing efforts. They have presented this program to both the President and me, and we have engaged in discussions regarding its progress,” Reverend Lasawa remarked.

He also commended the government for its proposal of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We lend our support to the idea of truth and reconciliation. The government’s approach is something we appreciate; we have delegated one of our representatives to be involved,” he stated.

The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is actively consulting with various stakeholders, including civil society leaders, faith groups, political parties, and media organizations, to refine the legal framework of the initiative. Chaired by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, the Committee’s objective is to establish a comprehensive legal, governance, and financial structure for the Commission. The chair will provide direct reports to the Prime Minister.
