Fiji’s Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, has asserted the necessity for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to redefine its role, distancing itself from past political interventions. Speaking in Parliament, Tikoduadua highlighted that the military’s involvement in political upheavals during the coups of 1987, 2000, and 2006 has historically undermined its reputation as a defender of democracy.

Tikoduadua stated, “We cannot heal if we do not acknowledge the past. We cannot move forward if we allow history to repeat itself.” Under his leadership, he expressed a commitment to ensuring that the RFMF becomes a stabilizing institution focused on national security, democratic values, and public service, rather than a political tool. His vision calls for the military to collaborate with civilian authorities, contributing to peace and stability within the nation.

These sentiments resonate with ongoing discussions among political leaders and military officials regarding the reform of the RFMF. During recent reconciliation events, notable figures, including RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, have echoed calls for a military that respects democratic principles and prioritizes the well-being of all Fijian citizens.

As Fiji embarks on this transformative journey, the emphasis on collaboration and the redefined role of the military signify a hopeful trajectory toward a more inclusive society. By establishing the military as a unifying force rather than a division, this shift presents an opportunity for Fiji to build a future characterized by peace and mutual respect among its diverse communities.
