A contingent from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) was deployed yesterday to assist in recovery efforts following the recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake that devastated Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, last week.
During a rallying address to the soldiers, Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, emphasized the critical role they play in helping to restore the lives of those affected by the disaster. He outlined that the initial team’s objective is to facilitate immediate recovery support for over 100,000 individuals impacted by the earthquake.
In his remarks, Ditoka encouraged the soldiers to leverage their expertise and experiences while on the ground to aid their fellow citizens in this challenging time. He mentioned the necessity for the personnel to prepare for the possibility of an extended deployment, reflecting the unpredictable nature of recovery operations.
The situation remains complex, as earlier this week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged the significant challenges Vanuatu faces, particularly due to aftershocks and the looming threat of a cyclone.
This deployment highlights the spirit of solidarity and assistance among Pacific nations in times of crisis. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, there is hope that the combined efforts of the RFMF and the people of Vanuatu will pave the way for recovery and rebuilding. The resilience of the affected communities, with support from neighboring nations, could lead to a stronger and united response in dealing with the aftermath of this natural disaster.
