Fiji’s military has committed to supporting efforts in the battle against illicit drugs, while firmly establishing that its role will not involve the use of weapons or direct enforcement actions. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), under the leadership of Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, has begun cooperating closely with the Fiji Police Force, following discussions with Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.

Major General Kalouniwai emphasized that the RFMF’s involvement is constrained by legal limitations that prevent it from directly engaging in drug enforcement operations. “We’ve started soon after my discussion with the Commissioner of Police, but we’re in a very limited role – the legislation does not allow us to actually get involved in the fight against drugs,” he stated in an interview at Queen Elizabeth Barracks.

The RFMF is actively contributing by sharing valuable information, providing planning assistance, and offering logistical support and equipment to the Police Force. Some military personnel will be integrated alongside police officers as part of this supportive role. “We’re providing logistical support in terms of equipment if they need it, whatever they need from us,” Maj-Gen Kalouniwai mentioned, reiterating their advisory function in the planning process.

Importantly, he clarified that soldiers will not carry arms during drug-related operations, stating, “But when it comes to arms, that’s a no, no for us. We haven’t reached that stage yet.” His remarks come after a joint meeting with Police Commissioner Tudravu, aimed at reinforcing the collaboration between the military and police to tackle the rising drug issues facing Fiji.

The proactive approach taken by both agencies could signal promising steps forward in addressing the challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse in the nation, highlighting the importance of cooperation while adhering to established legal frameworks. This partnership reflects a commitment to ensuring safety and security within the community, demonstrating a responsible approach to complex social issues.
