The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has announced that a military personnel has been ordered to take leave amid serious allegations of sharing sensitive information with drug syndicates operating in Fiji. This decision comes in response to a social media post that implicated the individual, revealing a mobile number associated with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in connection to the drug trade.
In a statement posted on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s Facebook page, the Commander confirmed that the personnel’s phone has been confiscated and the person has been brought in for questioning. An independent investigation is now underway to thoroughly examine the allegations. The Commander emphasized the importance of internal discipline and accountability within the RFMF, issuing a stern warning to all members: “We cannot take matters into our own hands, and involvement in such illegal activities will not be condoned within the RFMF.”
Furthermore, he reaffirmed the RFMF’s commitment to the democratic process, highlighting its decision during the December 2022 elections to respect the will of the Fijian people. For the first time in over thirty years, the Force has successfully distanced itself from political entanglements in public discussion. This emphasis on maintaining the rule of law and democratic principles reflects the RFMF’s intention to put the country first and rebuild trust within the community.
Major-General Kalouniwai also addressed past reconciliation efforts, stating that while these initiatives have been well-intentioned, they have sometimes faced criticism and skepticism. He remains hopeful that genuine attempts at reconciliation will eventually garner the recognition and support they deserve, allowing for healing and unity within the nation.
