A team from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has been deployed to assist in recovery efforts after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, last week.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, addressed the RFMF soldiers, emphasizing the critical role they will play in helping to restore the lives of over 100,000 individuals affected by the disaster. He mentioned the advanced team’s mission to provide immediate support and noted the value of the soldiers’ expertise and experience in their upcoming assignments on the ground.

He encouraged them to unite in solidarity, urging the personnel to aid their “fellow brothers and sisters” during this challenging time. Ditoka also advised the team to be prepared for a potentially extended deployment, expressing uncertainty regarding the duration of their service.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the considerable challenges Vanuatu is currently facing, which include possible aftershocks and the threats posed by a developing cyclone in the region.

This deployment of the RFMF illustrates the spirit of camaraderie and support among Pacific nations in times of crisis, showcasing how regional partnerships can play a vital role in disaster recovery efforts. Through their expertise and commitment, these soldiers will be instrumental in helping the people of Vanuatu rebuild their lives and communities after this devastating event.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Fiji and Vanuatu not only highlights the bonds of friendship in the Pacific region but also serves as a reminder of our collective resilience in the face of natural disasters.
