A contingent from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has been deployed to assist with recovery efforts following the significant 7.4 magnitude earthquake that impacted Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, last week. This swift action underscores the regional commitment to support those in distress after natural disasters.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, emphasized the critical role of the deployed soldiers in helping restore normalcy to the lives of over 100,000 individuals affected by the earthquake. He conveyed the need for the advance team to provide immediate assistance on the ground, and stressed the importance of sharing their skills and experiences with other troops that may follow.
Ditoka further encouraged the military personnel to be prepared for a potentially extended service period due to the unpredictable nature of the situation. He noted, “You might not be coming back, but if you do come back, then that’s okay,” highlighting his awareness of the challenges they may face.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka previously pointed out the ongoing difficulties for Vanuatu, including aftershocks and the looming threat of a cyclone in the region.
As Vanuatu navigates this challenging time, the support from Fiji not only demonstrates regional solidarity but also highlights the importance of unity in overcoming adversity. This collaborative response may serve as a beacon of hope, showcasing the resilience and compassion of nations in the face of natural calamities.
