A contingent from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) was deployed on Saturday to assist with recovery efforts in the aftermath of the significant 7.4 magnitude earthquake that recently impacted Port Villa, the capital of Vanuatu.

Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, addressed the RFMF personnel, emphasizing the crucial role they will play in helping restore the lives of over 100,000 individuals affected by the disaster. Ditoka noted the advance team’s mission is vital for providing immediate support to the recovery process.

He stated, “I think you can anticipate retaining the main body. That’s my thoughts. But I think they’ll need your expertise and experience when you’re there on the ground and handing over the experience that you have to the main body.” He encouraged the soldiers to assist their fellow citizens in this difficult time, reinforcing the importance of their efforts.

The Minister also indicated that the situation remains unpredictable, urging the troops to prepare for a potentially extended deployment. “I am not sure how this is going to pan out, but that’s my concept of the advance party. Be prepared for that; you might not be coming back, but if you do come back, then that’s ok,” he advised.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed concerns about the considerable challenges Vanuatu faces, including aftershocks and the looming threat of a cyclone in the region.

This deployment highlights the solidarity and readiness of the Fijian forces to support their neighbors in times of crisis. As they work to rebuild lives and communities, it is a testament to the resilience and cooperation among Pacific nations in the face of disaster.

In summary, the Fiji Military Forces are stepping in to provide crucial support to Vanuatu after a devastating earthquake, demonstrating a strong commitment to aiding those in need and showcasing the spirit of regional cooperation in challenging times.
