A contingent of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has been deployed to assist with recovery operations following the severe 7.4 magnitude earthquake that recently impacted Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu. This deployment marks a significant effort to support the lives of over 100,000 individuals affected by the disaster.
During a briefing with the RFMF soldiers, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka emphasized the critical nature of their work in helping restore the community and alleviate the suffering caused by the earthquake. He discussed the responsibilities of the advance team, which is expected to take immediate action in the recovery process.
Minister Ditoka expressed his confidence in the soldiers’ abilities, stating that their expertise will be invaluable on the ground. He encouraged them to assist the local population during this challenging time, highlighting the importance of unity and support for their fellow citizens.
He also advised the personnel to prepare for potential extended deployment, considering the unpredictable nature of the situation. Ditoka acknowledged the possibility that some soldiers may not return immediately, depending on the evolving needs on the ground.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka had noted earlier in the week that Vanuatu faces significant challenges not only from the earthquake and its aftershocks but also from the threat posed by a potential cyclone in the region.
In light of the country’s resilience and the willingness of international partners to help, there is hope that Vanuatu will recover and rebuild stronger than before. This collective effort showcases global solidarity in times of crisis, inspiring both local and international communities to come together in support of those in need.
