A contingent from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces was deployed yesterday to aid in the recovery efforts following the significant 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, last week.
During a briefing with the RFMF soldiers, Sakiasi Ditoka, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, emphasized the critical role they will play in restoring the lives disrupted by the earthquake. He noted that the initial team is charged with providing prompt support to help more than 100,000 individuals in Vanuatu who have been impacted by this disaster. Ditoka encouraged the soldiers to utilize their expertise and experience to assist those affected.
He added, “Help your fellow brothers and sisters in this time of need.” Furthermore, he advised the personnel to prepare for the possibility of an extended mission, indicating that the length of their deployment could be uncertain.
Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed concerns about the considerable challenges Vanuatu faces, compounded by aftershocks and the looming threat of an approaching cyclone.
This deployment highlights the solidarity of Pacific nations in times of crisis and the commitment to humanitarian support. As recovery efforts unfold, there is hope that the aid and expertise from Fiji will contribute to rebuilding the communities impacted by this natural disaster, and assist in alleviating the current challenges faced by Vanuatu.
In summary, the Fiji Military Forces are stepping in to provide essential relief in a time of crisis, showcasing regional collaboration and eagerness to help communities in distress.
