Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), has made it clear that the military is not involved in the current political turmoil within the Fijian government. Recently, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka publicly criticized cabinet ministers who are advocating for the establishment of a new political party, a matter that has captured significant media attention.

Another point of contention has been the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), which raised eyebrows since she was under investigation at the time of her appointment. This has further fueled discussions around governance and accountability in the country.

In response to these political developments, Major-General Kalouniwai stated, “That’s politics, why do we have to be concerned? We’re living in a democratic country today, it’s part of democracy, there is always a position.” This stance reflects his ongoing commitment to maintaining the military’s neutrality amid political disputes.

The military leader’s remarks emphasize a broader understanding of democratic principles, suggesting that dissent and differing opinions are natural aspects of a vibrant democratic society.

By preserving neutrality, the RFMF aims to support the democratic process and encourage a healthy political dialogue, reinforcing the notion that a diverse political landscape is essential for the growth and stability of governance in Fiji.

In summary, while Fiji is currently experiencing political challenges, the commitment of its military leadership to remain neutral may provide a stabilizing influence. This could foster an environment where diverse political views can coexist, ultimately strengthening the democratic framework of the nation.
