Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, has issued a grave warning regarding the escalating drug crisis in Fiji, labeling it an existential threat to the nation. In his remarks during the RFMF End of Year Parade, he underscored the devastating impact of drug abuse, which he stated is eroding the fabric of families and communities across the country.

Referencing previous statements by Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai about the alarming situation in Nadi, Major-General Kalouniwai acknowledged the concern that underpinned Gadai’s comments, despite recognizing that they breached the military’s chain of command. He emphasized the importance of addressing this critical issue, stating, “Though he crossed the line that protects our hierarchical order of command, we both agreed that his message speaks to the reality of what is happening around us today.”

Kalouniwai expressed that the issue of drugs is felt deeply by every citizen, resonating with the fears of families who are witnessing the negative impact of drugs in their communities. He described the situation as a collective cry from the silent majority who are yearning for effective solutions to a crisis that threatens the nation’s wellbeing.

In light of allegations concerning internal links between military personnel and drug syndicates, Major-General Kalouniwai has confirmed that disciplinary actions are being taken within the RFMF. He revealed that an investigation has been launched following reports of an RFMF member allegedly providing sensitive information to drug traffickers. The accused individual has been questioned, and their mobile device has been confiscated as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The Commander reiterated that any involvement in illegal activities would be met with zero tolerance. He highlighted the necessity of discipline and adherence to military protocols as fundamental tenets of the armed forces’ operation. As Fiji confronts this pressing issue, the emphasis on collective responsibility and accountability remains a hopeful step towards restoring order and safety in communities affected by drug-related crimes.
