The Methodist Church in Fiji is urging church leaders to adopt a more proactive and grassroots approach to tackle the issues of violence and social unrest that tend to rise during festive seasons. President Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou emphasized the pressing need for heightened community engagement and moral guidance, particularly during holidays when families and individuals may find themselves more prone to conflict.

Dr. Turagavou pointed out that the incidents of domestic violence around holiday periods serve as a significant reminder of the challenges facing communities. He stressed the importance of Christian leaders moving beyond traditional preaching from the pulpit and actively engaging within their communities. This presence is particularly crucial during festive times, when people may be more vulnerable.

“It is crucial for all Christian leaders to communicate the true meaning of the festive season,” Dr. Turagavou said. He noted the need for this message to come from theological, biblical, and spiritual perspectives. This, he believes, is essential as leaders look to enhance their role in discouraging harmful behaviors and reinforcing positive values.

The President highlighted that the violence often observed during holidays is linked to a decline in values and a misunderstanding of the essence of religious celebrations. He advocated for Christmas and other religious holidays to focus on themes of love, reconciliation, and mutual respect instead of excess and conflict.

Furthermore, Dr. Turagavou called for greater cooperation among churches, government bodies, traditional leaders, and community groups to address the root causes of social issues and prevent violence. Looking ahead, the Methodist Church has pledged to expand its outreach programs in 2026, emphasizing a strong community presence and early intervention efforts. The aim is to reduce violence while fostering stronger family ties and community relationships across Fiji, offering hope for a more peaceful future.
