The Methodist Church of Fiji has launched a significant initiative aimed at improving health and wellbeing among its leaders, effective from January 1st. The program encourages church officials, especially reverends, to cut down on kava consumption and abstain from smoking. This initiative reflects a commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles among church leadership.
Jolame Lasawa, the Secretary of the Methodist Church, emphasized the importance of leading by example. He stated, “We want our leaders to set the right example by cutting back on kava and smoking, spending more time with family, and opening up conversations on social issues in our communities.” This approach not only advocates for physical health but also aims to strengthen family bonds and foster discussions on pressing social issues within communities.
The decision to implement this program was formally endorsed during the church’s annual meeting last year, highlighting the collective desire to instigate positive change both within the church and the wider community. The initiative stands as a beacon of hope, encouraging congregations to follow suit and engage in healthier practices, thus reinforcing the church’s leadership role in societal well-being.
