The Methodist Church in Fiji is set to enhance its outreach initiatives in 2026, aiming to provide crucial support for vulnerable young individuals grappling with issues such as alcohol abuse and social pressures. Reverend Dr. Semisis Turagavou, the President of the Methodist Church, emphasized the need for a fresh approach, acknowledging that traditional methods are increasingly inadequate to connect with today’s youth.

Highlighting the importance of an active mission, Reverend Turagavou stated, “It is a very challenging role within the church, but we are a missional church. The church must operate, it must keep moving, and it must go out to where the people are.” The church has already initiated programs this year specifically designed to assist young people affected by alcohol-related problems, with plans for significant expansion in 2026.

The Methodist Church’s strategy will focus on building relationships at the grassroots level, offering guidance, education, and support rather than solely focusing on preaching. Reverend Turagavou explained that their outreach is not limited to individuals affiliated with the Methodist Church but aims to include all young people, regardless of their religious backgrounds.

In addition, the church plans to deepen its collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and other government bodies, particularly through Methodist-run schools located in rural and remote communities. As part of their initiative, church leaders are scheduled to engage in discussions early next year to establish joint programs that directly address the pressing issues young people face today.

With an emphasis on unity and cooperation, church leaders firmly believe these efforts will be instrumental in effectively addressing the evolving social challenges impacting young people in Fiji. Such endeavors reflect a hopeful commitment to creating a supportive environment where young individuals can thrive and overcome their difficulties.
