Fiji Men’s Rugby 7s aim to defend Olympic gold medal without being affected by critics.

“We are not settling on the comments of the critics.”

This was expressed by Team Fiji men’s rugby 7s assistant coach Setefano Cakau when questioned about the side facing criticism for not clinching a cup title in the previous 21 tournaments in the HSBC SVNS series.

“We are not settling on those comments and we are moving forward with the task at hand,” he said.

The former Fiji 7s skipper added that the main goal for his side is to go to the Olympics and perform to the best of their ability.

“The boys are looking forward to competing at the Olympic Games and I want to thank the supporters and the people of Fiji for backing the team. I know it is not an easy task ahead of us and we need your prayers and support for all.”

Cakau said all players were selected on merit and considering the impact they could have on the team’s performance.

“It is a fair contest for everyone, based on training and what we want the team to have. It is not an easy thing for them to make their way into the team and I want to thank them (boys) for their hard work.”

He added that the team’s goal was to defend the Olympic gold medal.

“Everyone’s working towards the gold medal and our main focus is to try and win that gold.”

The Rugby Sevens competition at the Olympic Games will be played from July 26-31.
