The Fiji men’s national netball team is gearing up for two significant international test matches this August, marking an important milestone for the squad. Head coach Jioeli Makare confirmed that the team will face off against Tonga and New Zealand, showcasing their talent on a larger stage.

Currently, the team is in the midst of an intensive eight-week training program, having just completed the first week of preparation at the University of the South Pacific (USP). Makare emphasized the importance of these training sessions, stating, “We’ve started our eight-week journey now. There is an international tournament for men where we will have test matches against New Zealand and Tonga.”

The confirmation of the venue for these matches is still pending, but preparations are reportedly progressing smoothly as the players fine-tune their skills and conditioning ahead of the event.

Notably, this push for recognition and competition aligns with Makare’s previous comments about expanding international opportunities for the Fiji men’s team. Their recent participation in trials and training signifies a concerted effort to elevate the profile of men’s netball in Fiji, reinforcing aspirations for future tournaments, including the potential for netball to be included as an Olympic sport at the Brisbane 2032 Games.

Overall, the anticipation surrounding these upcoming test matches reflects a growing momentum for men’s netball in Fiji. With the team’s commitment and the support from the local netball community, there is hope for a bright future, highlighting the promising trajectory of the sport within the country.
