Fiji Men’s 7s Team: Silver Medal Triumph Fuels Future Ambitions

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the standards established by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and youth aspiring to represent Fiji. His remarks came during a welcoming ceremony organized by the Fiji Rugby Union on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, which was attended by families and loved ones.

Tuwai acknowledged that although the results did not meet everyone’s expectations, the team possesses the potential to rebound. He began by thanking God for protection and guidance during their preparation for the Paris campaign and their safe return. He expressed appreciation for the coaches, management, and the support from their families and friends.

“We apologize for returning with a medal that wasn’t gold, and we recognize the high hopes placed upon us,” he said. He reflected on the challenges of being away from family for a month and the emotional toll it takes.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and thanked the coaching staff for their unwavering support and contribution during the tournament. He highlighted Mr. Osea Kolonisau for his continuous dedication to the teams.

Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey noted that the gathering aimed to celebrate the teams’ remarkable achievements, which have brought pride to the nation. He praised the players for displaying the essence of Fijian rugby, showcasing resilience and skill against tough opponents.

“You have not only represented Fiji but also inspired many young athletes to aspire to wear that iconic jersey,” he said, acknowledging their silver medal win at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Mazey extended gratitude to the coaches, medical team, and all those who supported the teams behind the scenes, recognizing the collective effort that contributed to their success.

As the celebrations continued, he pointed out that while the team did not secure gold, the silver medal is a significant achievement, representing their hard work and dedication. He encouraged everyone to view this accomplishment as a stepping stone towards greater success, emphasizing that Fiji’s rugby legacy will continue to inspire both the nation and the world.

“Now is the time to rest, enjoy family time, recharge, and prepare for future challenges,” he added.
