The Fiji men’s sevens rugby team has made a strong start in the HSBC Sevens series, taking the lead after a remarkable performance at the Dubai Sevens tournament. Coached by Osea Kolinisau, the team triumphed over Spain with a score of 19-5 in the final, marking their first tournament victory in two years and ending a challenging 22-tournament winless streak.
Fiji currently tops the standings with 20 points, placing them ahead of Spain, which follows closely with 18 points. The overall rankings feature Argentina, New Zealand, and France as the next three teams, while the USA finds itself at the bottom of the table.
In the women’s division, the Fijiana team is placed 12th, having garnered just one point from their 10th-place finish in Dubai. Australia leads the women’s standings, closely pursued by New Zealand and France.
The next challenge for both men’s and women’s teams will be the upcoming Cape Town Sevens tournament this weekend, providing another opportunity for the squads to showcase their skills and improve their standings.
This exciting start for the Fiji men’s team not only boosts morale but also inspires hopes for a successful season ahead. The momentum gained from their Dubai victory could serve as a catalyst for continued successes in future tournaments.
