The Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s team is intensifying its preparations for the HSBC Los Angeles 7s tournament, with key players back in training camp. The team aims to build upon its recent success, having clinched the title at the Singapore 7s earlier this month.

Head coach and Olympic gold medalist Osea Kolinisau acknowledges that the LA 7s will present unique challenges due to a new format, which features only the top eight teams competing. “We have to treat every match like a final or a quarter-final,” Kolinisau remarked, emphasizing the need for increased consistency in gameplay. He noted areas for improvement, specifically in technical skills and defense.

In gearing up for LA, Kolinisau has opted to commence preparations earlier, allowing ample time for the team to acclimate and refine their strategies. The tournament will take place next month in the United States, providing an exciting opportunity for the team to showcase its talents on a global stage.

This proactive approach mirrors the ongoing efforts within Fiji’s rugby setup, including initiatives for developing younger talent as observed in the previous selections leading to tournaments like the Dubai and Cape Town sevens. The focus on nurturing a blend of seasoned players and newcomers could bode well for Fiji’s long-term objectives, particularly with ambitions of returning to the Olympic podium by 2028.

As the team gears up for its upcoming challenges, there remains a palpable sense of hope among fans and stakeholders alike. The dedication and hard work exhibited during training instill confidence that Fiji will deliver strong performances in LA. With high standards set and a commitment to continuous improvement, the Fiji Men’s 7s team is on a promising path as they head into this crucial tournament.
