Fiji Men’s 7s: A Silver Medal and a Nation’s Pride

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the high standard set by both Fiji’s teams during the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and its youth aspiring to represent Fiji. His comments came during a welcoming ceremony for both the men’s and women’s teams held on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union and attended by family and friends.

Tuwai acknowledged that the team’s results were not what many had hoped for, but he believed in their potential to bounce back. He expressed gratitude to God for the guidance and protection during their month of preparation leading up to the Olympics and upon their return. Tuwai also thanked the coaches, management, and families for their unwavering support.

He apologized to the nation for not bringing home the desired medal color, acknowledging the weight of expectations placed on the team. Tuwai reflected on the challenges of being away from loved ones during the tournament.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances, expressing appreciation for the coaches and management for their support. He specifically acknowledged Osea Kolonisau and his family for their ongoing dedication to the team.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, highlighted the purpose of the gathering—celebrating the notable achievements of both teams that have instilled immense pride in Fiji. Mazey praised the resilience, skill, and determination exhibited by the players throughout the tournament, which showcased the heart of Fijian rugby.

He emphasized that their efforts not only represented Fiji on the world stage but also inspired a new generation of young athletes to aspire to wear the iconic jersey. Mazey expressed immense joy at the team’s achievement of winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics, acknowledging the collective effort behind their success.

He thanked the coaching staff, medical team, and everyone involved behind the scenes for their commitment, stating that their dedication had been essential for the young men’s success. As the heroes returned home, he reminded everyone that the silver medal was more than just an accolade; it symbolized the countless hours of practice and sacrifices made.

Mazey noted that even though the teams did not secure gold, their achievement was remarkable. Looking ahead, he encouraged continued support for the teams and regarded the silver medal as a stepping stone toward future success, asserting that Fiji could remain a powerhouse in rugby and inspire not only the nation but the world. He concluded by urging the players to take time to rest with family and prepare for upcoming challenges.
