Fiji Medical Laboratory Overtime Pay Delays Spark Scrutiny

The ongoing issue of unpaid overtime for medical lab scientists in Fiji continues to raise concerns, with up to 60 workers reportedly still awaiting payment despite reminders sent to the Health Ministry. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu previously encouraged these workers to inform his office about their unpaid dues, suggesting that arrangements would be made to address the situation. However, Jignesh Sharma, president of the Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences, has indicated that no payments or arrangements have been made thus far.

Sharma detailed that multiple emails have been sent to the Health Minister and other officials, underscoring the pressing nature of the issue and requesting a meeting to discuss the matter further. To date, these communications have gone unanswered. The affected workers fall within the salary Band F, a classification that highlights the critical nature of their roles, particularly in light of ongoing staffing challenges within the healthcare system.

This issue mirrors previous discussions highlighting the Ministry of Health’s approval of overtime payments, which were initially set to be effective for a limited period. In a circular issued by permanent secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, it was outlined that the approval for overtime payments would last only six months, prompting calls for a more sustainable solution that aligns with the ongoing staffing shortages in medical laboratories across the nation.

Sharma expressed concern over the temporary nature of such measures, arguing that without a permanent resolution, similar issues are likely to reemerge. The staffing situation within many laboratories remains dire, as many operate with minimal staff, often struggling to meet the demands of healthcare delivery.

Addressing these staffing and overtime payment issues is crucial, not just for the welfare of the medical laboratory professionals but also for the enhancement of healthcare services in Fiji. By engaging in open dialogue and collaboration with healthcare providers, the government has a significant opportunity to implement long-term solutions that would bolster the effectiveness of medical laboratories and ultimately improve patient care outcomes. The hope is that with continued advocacy from health professionals, the government will take the necessary steps to address these challenges, fostering a more stable and efficient healthcare environment in the long run.
