The Fiji Medical Association (FMA) is urging the public to utilize established channels for raising concerns about medical practitioners. This statement comes from the FMA’s president, Dr. Alipate Vakamocea, following a viral social media post that criticized medical interns at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) over an alleged mishandled circumcision of a child.
The child’s parent accused the hospital’s medical team of performing a poorly executed surgery, necessitating a second circumcision. She also expressed concerns about the professionalism exhibited by the doctors involved during the procedure.
In response, Dr. Vakamocea emphasized the importance of the proper grievance pathways available to the public for reporting any issues pertaining to medical interns, students, dentists, or other medical professionals. He clarified that the FMA operates independently and any formal complaint would be directed to their Conducts Committee for thorough investigation.
Dr. Vakamocea reassured the public that if the complaints were validated and there was a breach of professional conduct or standards of care, suitable actions would be taken. He acknowledged that issues related to circumcision are not uncommon but noted that such procedures are elective and not emergencies, thereby carrying a risk of complications.
He mentioned that medical services at CWM are offered free of charge, but it also serves as a teaching hospital for training future medical professionals. Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary for Health, stated that the ministry is aware of the situation and will address it through their communications team.
This incident highlights the importance of patient advocacy and the recognized channels available for complaints within the healthcare system. It serves as a reminder that while complications can occur, there are structured avenues for addressing grievances, which can lead to improvements in medical care. By raising concerns appropriately, patients play a crucial role in enhancing healthcare services while also ensuring accountability among medical professionals.
