The Fiji Awards for Media Excellence (FAME) will make a triumphant return this November after a lengthy 17-year hiatus. This announcement was unveiled by the Fiji Media Council and the Fijian Media Association during the Pacific Media Partnership Conference, marking a significant milestone for Fiji’s media landscape.
Originally launched in 2007, the FAME Awards celebrated the achievements of individuals in Fiji’s media industry annually until they were discontinued in 2008 due to stringent censorship laws that severely restricted media freedom beginning in 2009. The last award night took place before these regulations were imposed, reflecting a challenging period for journalism in the country.
Fijian Media Association General Secretary Stanley Simpson expressed optimism regarding the revival of the FAME Awards, stating it signifies a restoration of media freedom in Fiji. He noted the harsh conditions journalists faced during the years leading up to the discontinuation of the awards, including the repressive MIDA Act of 2010, which has since been repealed.
The upcoming 2025 FAME Awards will recognize outstanding journalistic achievements through a total of 30 awards across eight categories. This event aims not only to honor the hard work of journalists but also to raise public awareness about the vital role of quality journalism and the importance of press freedom in society.
The return of the FAME Awards is a hopeful indication of a brighter future for media in Fiji, as it fosters an environment where journalists can thrive and contribute positively to the community. It highlights the resilience of the media industry and the ongoing commitment to restoring a robust and free press.
