The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has initiated enforcement measures following an oil discharge incident into a public drain along Jai Ambamma Road in Vatuwaqa. An inspection conducted by Environmental Inspectors confirmed that the oil discharge was traced back to the yard of Ashok Transport Pte Limited.

As a result of this incident, the Ministry has issued a Prohibition Notice along with Remedial Orders under the Environment Management Act 2005. In line with this, a fixed penalty of $1,500 has been imposed, adhering to the Environment Management (Waste Disposal and Recycling) Regulations 2007. The company has been instructed to undertake a thorough cleanup of the oil contamination in the affected drain and on its premises, with a deadline set for completion within 14 days.

The Prohibition Notice mandates the immediate halt of any discharges of oil, waste oil, or lubricants from the facility. Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations, stating that non-compliance with waste permit conditions is a significant offense. He warned that the Ministry would impose penalties and pursue legal action where neglect is evident, reinforcing the need for accountability in environmental matters.

Dr. Michael also highlighted that environmental protection is crucial and not optional for businesses, particularly those near waterways. He assured that the Ministry would continuously monitor the site to ensure adherence to the issued orders and has called on all enterprises to prioritize the safe handling, storage, and containment of oil and other hazardous materials. This proactive approach reflects the Ministry’s dedication to maintaining environmental integrity and safeguarding public health.
