The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage, and Arts is in the process of formulating a National Policy designed to recognize and support Fiji’s Melanesian community. This initiative was highlighted during a landmark seminar marking the 160th anniversary of the arrival of Melanesian laborers in Fiji, which was opened by the Hon. Ifereimi Vasu, Minister for iTaukei Affairs.
In his address, Minister Vasu emphasized the importance of the Melanesian Council’s role in developing an engaging program that encourages community connections and discussions about future aspirations. He remarked that this seminar represents a significant milestone in acknowledging the contributions and sacrifices made by Melanesian descendants.
The seminar, held at the Great Council of Chiefs Talanoa Lounge in Draiba, Nasese, serves to foster cultural inclusion and strengthen national identity among the diverse communities within Fiji. The celebration is set to culminate tomorrow at the Suva Foreshore, where Fiji’s Prime Minister will preside over the final events.
This initiative not only honors historical contributions but also paves the way for a more inclusive future, recognizing the vital role that the Melanesian culture plays in the diverse tapestry of Fiji’s national identity. As the community engages in these discussions, there is hope for a stronger, united national identity that embraces all its cultural influences.
