Approximately 70 officers from the Republic of Fiji Navy, in collaboration with representatives from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and the Fiji Police Water Police Unit, have recently completed the Boat Master Licence and Restricted Master Engineer Licence Class training. A graduation ceremony took place at the Naval Base in Walu Bay to celebrate the officers’ successful completion, marking a significant enhancement in Fiji’s efforts to strengthen maritime safety and security.
Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of protecting Fiji’s maritime space for national security, particularly amid increasing threats such as drug trafficking. He stated, “Maritime safety and security are national priorities for Fiji. As an island nation, our security, economy, and daily life depend on safe and well-governed seas. Maritime space is Fiji’s most important space for national security.”
Acknowledging the support received, the Minister recognized the contributions of the United Kingdom, UNDP, and MSAF, which facilitated this capacity-building initiative through financial and technical resources.
Rustam Pulatov, Team Leader of Effective Governance and Inclusive Growth for UNDP Pacific, highlighted that maritime security challenges, including transnational crime, necessitate collective action rather than individual responses. His remarks underscored that the core of the training revolves around safety, protecting lives, securing government assets, and enhancing confidence in maritime operations. He noted, “It also reinforces accountability and professionalism across the agencies and is essential when operating in a challenging maritime environment.”
Navy Chief Commodore Timoci Natuva stressed the value of capacity building, suggesting that enhancing the skills of officers will lead to more effective and efficient duty performance. With this graduation, a total of 110 officers are now certified to operate small boats, assist in search and rescue operations, and contribute to the Navy’s mission of safeguarding borders and the well-being of citizens.
This training achievement signifies a proactive step towards ensuring that Fiji’s maritime operations are safe and secure, fostering a collaborative effort among various agencies dedicated to national security and safety at sea.
