Miriama Latianara has proudly returned to Fiji after completing her Master’s degree in Maritime Law and Policy from the World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden. A legal officer at the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), Ms. Latianara graduated in late 2025 and is grateful for the unique opportunity that arose when MSAF’s Human Resources Department shared an Expression of Interest (EOI) advertisement for the program.

Previously, she acquired a Professional Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of the South Pacific in 2010. Ms. Latianara, who hails from Taveuni, expressed how pursuing a Master’s degree extended her aspirations beyond what she initially planned. Having joined MSAF in 2020, her experiences in the maritime sector were eye-opening and revealed the myriad of opportunities available in this often-overlooked field.

In her own words, “Attaining a Master’s degree was never the plan for me. I was grateful for what I had already. But working in the maritime sector opened my eyes to the vast possibilities.” The program enriched her understanding of global maritime governance and immersed her in the critical laws and policies established by significant entities like the International Maritime Organization and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Additionally, her studies enhanced her skills in policy analysis, empowering her to evaluate and develop effective maritime policies.

Studying alongside 127 peers from 52 countries and engaging with faculty and leaders within the maritime community further expanded her professional network and enriched her experience. However, the journey was not without challenges. Ms. Latianara faced personal losses while abroad, unable to attend family funerals or celebrate milestones in person. She expressed gratitude for modern technology, which helped her maintain connections despite physical distance.

One of her proudest moments was participating as a representative on an international student panel alongside peers from Ghana, South Africa, Suriname, and Indonesia, addressing students from Asia House Denmark. The group shared diverse backgrounds ranging from law and economics to maritime administration, showcasing the various career paths available in the maritime sector.

For those contemplating a similar journey, she emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation for both academic and personal aspects of studying abroad. Ms. Latianara advises future students to be open to cultural differences and new ways of thinking while also being prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

“Embrace the experience fully, as it would enrich your personal and professional growth,” she encourages, underscoring the value of learning from peers, faculty, and the local community in Malmö, Sweden. Ms. Latianara’s journey reflects both dedication and resilience, serving as an inspiration to those aiming to make significant contributions to the maritime field.
