Fiji Maps Climate Displacement Hotspots with New Risk Index

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Fiji, in collaboration with the Fijian Government and various development stakeholders, has successfully concluded its second Technical Workshop on the Risk Index for Climate Displacement (RICD) in Suva. This initiative aims to tackle the pressing issue of climate-related displacement.

The RICD, a product of the Climate Mobility Innovation Lab (CMIL), serves as a proactive tool that forecasts climate-induced displacement by marrying hazard data, exposure levels, and vulnerability assessments with community insights.

During the recent workshop, participants confirmed and validated the initial macro-level RICD analysis for Fiji, pinpointing critical “hotspots” where the risks of climate displacement are most acute. The discussions also emphasized the importance of enhancing national datasets, addressing any existing information gaps, and mapping out the next steps, which include comprehensive community-level assessments.

Organizers highlighted that this achievement strengthens Fiji’s commitment under the Pacific Regional Framework on Climate Mobility. It is a crucial step in supporting long-term resilience strategies for communities that are most at risk from climate-driven migration. This collaborative effort showcases the proactive measures being taken in Fiji to address the challenges posed by climate change, ultimately fostering stronger and more resilient communities.
