A 52-year-old man has been arrested by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly committing fraud to obtain financial gains. The incident reportedly occurred on September 8, 2023, when the accused deceitfully secured $100 from the victim using M-Paisa.
The investigation began after the victim encountered a Facebook post related to car rentals, which instructed them to pay a deposit to book a vehicle. After sending the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver via phone, raising suspicions. Subsequently, the victim reported the incident to the Consumer Council, which then referred the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva.
The accused is set to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions. With the rise of digital platforms, scammers can take advantage of unsuspecting individuals, making it crucial for consumers to verify the legitimacy of offers before sending money. The authorities’ swift action in this instance reflects a commitment to tackling fraud and protecting citizens from financial exploitation.
