A 52-year-old man has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly committing fraud related to financial transactions. The accused is believed to have obtained $100 from a victim through deception on September 8, 2023.
According to reports, the victim was browsing through Facebook when they stumbled upon an advertisement for a car hire service. Following the instructions provided in the post, the victim sent a deposit to reserve a vehicle. However, attempts to contact the driver for confirmation proved unsuccessful.
The incident was subsequently reported to the Consumer Council, which escalated the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This case underscores the growing concerns about online scams and the importance of vigilance when making financial transactions through social media. As authorities work to protect consumers from fraud, it’s essential for individuals to verify the authenticity of offers and the entities behind them before sending any money.
