Fiji Man Charged in Facebook Car Hire Scam

A 52-year-old man has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly obtaining financial advantage through deception. The incident reportedly occurred on September 8, 2023, when the accused is said to have deceitfully taken $100 from a victim via the M-Paisa platform.

According to the police investigation, the victim discovered a car hire advertisement while scrolling through Facebook. Following the instructions in the post, the victim sent a deposit to secure the rental of a vehicle. However, attempts to contact the driver afterward were unsuccessful, leading the victim to report the incident to the Consumer Council. The case was subsequently referred to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Suva.

The accused is expected to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today, where the situation will be formally addressed.
